Epic had been battling Apple in court over app store fees since 2020, when Sweeney conceded defeat in 2024 in what he called "a sad outcome for all developers." Epic Games paid $520 million to settle FTC allegations of privacy violations and unwanted charges in 2022. The company is the creator of the Unreal Engine, one of the most used game development tool kits for other studios.
