Spencer founded inter-broker dealer NEX Group (formerly ICAP), which was acquired by CME Group in 2018 for $5.4 billion. After the half stock, half cash deal, Spencer was granted 3 million shares of CME. He now owns and runs private IPGL Group, which has more than ?1 billion in assets. A loyal Tory, Spencer served as the Conservative Party's treasurer from 2006 to 2010. Spencer was granted peerage by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and now sits in the House of Lords.
